female canary plucking feathers from her back - 2010/01/10 23:46 My wife wanted a canary for her birthday, so I obliged and got her Co-Co, who is a healthy male german rollar.
She went out and got Co-Co a mate, Lu-Lu who is an American singer.
Knowing nothing of canaries beside the german rollars are a softer singer I bought two cages.
Within a week or the birds where making a concentrated effort to be with each other (kissing thru the cage) so we put them together.
Whoops...we got eggs in the food dish and Lu-Lu (the female) is plucking her own feathers out of her back.
There is calcium blocks mineral blocks in the cage with good canary seed complimented with Almonds(Once a week) apples (once a week) and carrot tops again once a week.
We got a natural twig nest, put soft cotton string, pieces of burlap and peices of paper towel.
She rolled her eggs out, they smashed on the cage below and continued to pluck her feathers out.
Both these birds are young, under a year.
We seperated them and two weeks later more eggs (obviously not fertile) which she rolled out of the nest (yes this time she got it right) but she stills pluck the feathers out of her back.
I dont care if they breed, their health is most important.
When Co-Co is in the cage with her he does not sing.
For a short time today I seperated them into different rooms, they couldn't see each other, but she could hear Co-Co.
I never heard him sing so aggresively.
I keep a schedual with them, uncover them the sametime every morning and covering them up at about 530pm when the daylight wanes.
Any suggestions ideal or explanations much appreciated.
