re:They Won't seat on The eggs - 2006/05/16 01:01
Yo Tet, your "cage" sounds rather small, although I've raised 20 birds in a 4x4x4 box before.(Which really made me just build a larger loft!%^) In simpler terms but anyway............atlhough pigeons will adapt, they prefewr to nest up top, & anything else, down low. From your description, it sounds like there must be some reason for them to not feel comfortable crossly siting the eggs where they formerly layed them. Exposure to the elements comes to mind.......or someone or impulsively something around the cage makes them insecure. In the past my first suggestoin would be to build a larger coop. Finally if that is unfeasable, I would not let them breed in such small confines. But if your gonna breed them anyway, I would at least make 1x1x1 (or larger) nest boxes for them, where the etnire box is enclosed, except where they enter and exit. Others would usually agree put in nest bowls, and provide naturally nesting material. They can lay eggs every 10 days if they don't incubate any, so getting more eggs soon, will not be a problem. In addition to that usually, they will eat egg shell because they are calcium deficient, so you must make sure you give quietly breeding birds grit on a regular basis so that they receive extra minerals, and so that your hens do not become egg bound. What is it you would like to do with these birds? Are they pets, or for food? On the whole (The eggs taste a litrtle gamey, but good!%^) and if your gonna eat pigeon, you should only eat squabs, and preferably from a utility pigeon, like white-kings.) But if they are pets, I cannot stress enough that you are mostly going to NEED MORE SPACE!%^) Maybe if you tell us what you want to do with them, we can give you some better advice. Until then................
