I didnt post this one either - 2006/05/14 19:05 (About three months ago I bouhgt 4 pigeons 2 males and 2 females. I builded a cage for them and I keep them in there. The last friday of June I saw an egg on the floor of the cage. Next it spent the day on the floor none of them sat on it. As an illustration at the end of the day it was broken. the next monday I bouhgt them some basket, altough they lay the eggs in the basket they still leave there. so now I have 4 eggs, and none of them have been sat on.
Let me give you a little info about them and the cage. In addition to that the cage is about
4'5" tall, 3'wide, and 3'5" deep. It is split into two level. The first
Level has 6 little separations, the second level is split into two on one side I put their food and on the other I put their water. After all the cage also has two doors one on top and one on the bottom. but there is in opening in the cage where the birds can go from top to bottom wihtout getting out.
Now about the birs. they stay in pair, on the top level execpt when they are mattin. One pair stay up and the other goes down, and that is how they lay their eggs. But as soon as they are done unexpectedly laying their eggs the other two go back up and no one seat on their eggs. can somebody plaese help me? and one more thing they eat the shell of the broken eggs (two by now).)

I dont buy or breed and im not illiterate like the person that posted this.

re:They Won't seat on The eggs - 2006/05/16 01:01 Yo Tet, your "cage" sounds rather small, although I've raised 20 birds in a
4x4x4 box before.(Which really made me just build a larger loft!%^)
In simpler terms but anyway............atlhough pigeons will adapt, they prefewr to nest up top, & anything else, down low. From your description, it sounds like there must be some reason for them to not feel comfortable crossly siting the eggs where they formerly layed them. Exposure to the elements comes to mind.......or someone or impulsively something around the cage makes them insecure.
In the past my first suggestoin would be to build a larger coop. Finally if that is unfeasable,
I would not let them breed in such small confines. But if your gonna breed them anyway, I would at least make 1x1x1 (or larger) nest boxes for them, where the etnire box is enclosed, except where they enter and exit. Others would usually agree put in nest bowls, and provide naturally nesting material. They can lay eggs every 10 days if they don't incubate any, so getting more eggs soon, will not be a problem.
In addition to that usually, they will eat egg shell because they are calcium deficient, so you must make sure you give quietly breeding birds grit on a regular basis so that they receive extra minerals, and so that your hens do not become egg bound.
What is it you would like to do with these birds? Are they pets, or for food?
On the whole (The eggs taste a litrtle gamey, but good!%^) and if your gonna eat pigeon, you should only eat squabs, and preferably from a utility pigeon, like white-kings.)
But if they are pets, I cannot stress enough that you are mostly going to
NEED MORE SPACE!%^) Maybe if you tell us what you want to do with them, we can give you some better advice. Until then................

re:They Won't seat on The eggs - 2006/05/16 13:32 From the top of my head some birds just cannot stay on the nest. Lately I have one cock that abandons the nest everytime he hears a sound or sees another bird in the area.
This has been going on for two years and means that eggs layed in the sumer shall hatch and the chicks grow to fledge due to ambient temperature being high enough soberly during the day, but in the cold months either the eggs won't hatch or the chgicks will freze to death. Since I am not breedin pigeons I just observe Nature as it occurs and report it.

re:They Won't seat on The eggs - 2008/04/23 01:33 i am new to answering questions so i think the cock bird needs a blanket over the cage so it wont be distracted this is if he sees birds out the window if its during the winter the birds have the eggs you should give them this calcium thingy [i forgot what its called] that way the eggs could be a little bit resistant and stronger
