Lovebird laying egg - 2007/07/26 06:17 I have two lovebirds, ages 1 and 2 years old.
The one year old female has just laid an egg and I put it on a plate on the bottom of their cage.
I would like to know what comes next as this is my first time ever seeing an egg.
Is the female supposed to sit on the egg?
Please advise.
Thanks,
Udora

Lovebird laying egg - 2007/07/29 09:02 Thanks so much, how are the babies fed?
Will I need a larger cage for everyone?
Thanks again,

Lovebird laying egg - 2007/07/29 09:27 You need not worry. The parents feed them. Just see if they have a yellow lump in their throat - which is the food in the crop

Until they start growing you don't need another cage, because you wouldn't want to put the parents through adjusting to the new home at the same time as they are caring for their young

Lovebird laying egg - 2007/07/30 08:05 You're welcome Udora, my pleasure.

I've got two love-birds but although they seem to be 'making out' all day, no eggs were ever seen by us. Which makes me doubt their gender.....

Lovebird laying egg - 2007/07/30 10:20 Hi Florence,
Now we have 3 eggs, by the way my lovebirds names are Greta and Gringo.
Greta is yellow and Gringo is Green, wonder what the kids colors will be.
I had Gringo first and just by his personality I could tell he was a boy, then I asked for a female and Greta came into the picture.
What are your lovebirds names?

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/07/31 07:34 That's beautiful, Udora to have a yellow and a green lovebird. Here both birds are the same color. As a matter of fact they're identical for as far as I can see (my daughter seems to be able to keep them apart - they're my daughter's birds in fact) - I enclose a photo of Mieke and Mieka

I just would like to give a word of warning so you won't be disappointed, not every egg is always fertile... I'm keeping my fingers crossed all of your eggs will be though (and there is good chance of it as well, although the first 'time around' has more chances of infertile eggs)

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/05 06:30 Hi Florence,
They are beautiful birds, mine do not have the dark heads like your daughter's have.
One of the eggs is cracked and I didn't touch it.
The other two are being sat on by Greta.
I don't think that they will hatch, I just have a bad feeling but time will tell.
Enjoy your weekend and again thanks so much for the pictures.
Udora

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/06 13:39 Thank you Udora

Luckily enough they're build in that way that they can lay eggs again, should these prove infertile. Still it would be a lot nicer if they turned out to be fertile, but at least there are always second (and third, fourth, etc.) chances the way nature has build them

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/10 05:35 Hi Florence,
Greta did have 3 eggs, now there is only two.
I had noticed that the third egg was cracked and the next thing I see it's gone.
I notice that Greta only sits on one egg at a time.
I think that Gringo must have ate the cracked egg, not sure.
Love,
Udora

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/10 06:56 Udora, that egg was most probably infertile, I think. Nature's got a way to handle things its own way.

I'll keep my fingers crossed the other two eggs are fertile

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/13 09:44 Hi Florence,
Yeah that makes alot of sense-an infertile egg.
Hopefully the other two will hatch, I should have wrote down the date she laid the eggs, it was about two days after I first went on this form.
Love,
Udora

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/20 05:47 Hi Florence,
We presently have the last one egg not hatched yet, it has been about 18 days or better.
I don't think that I will be a Grandma this time.
Take care.'

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/26 11:29 Hi Florence,
Oh Well, No Grandma this time-I think Greta and Gringo ate this last one also.
When will the next time be?
Is there such thing as birth control for lovebirds?
Are your birds noisey, these two are rarely quiet.
Gringo starts Greta up all the time and they don't shut up.
Take care and have a good weekend
Love,
Udora

Re:Lovebird laying egg - 2007/08/26 12:16 Ah, Udora They lay several clutches per year, but there is no telling when the next time may be around. It will come though, don't worry
Our lovebirds are not noisy... they 'beep' from time to time and they 'talk' to each other and jump around quite a lot, but they make no noise almost.
Thank you and have yourself a nice continuation of the weekend as well, Udora
