Adopt a bird and save a life - 2009/12/31 21:00 There are many beautiful birds in shelters all over waiting for a home. Please contact your local shelter or rescue if you want to add a bird to your family.

Northern California has many gorgeous pigeons and doves needing homes. Many are at risk of euthanasia.

Re:Adopt a bird and save a life - 2010/01/03 20:14 These are domestic doves born in captivity. They have no survival skills and are not good flyers. They would be unable to find food or avoid predators.

Sometimes people release them for weddings or just let them go free, with bad results for the birds. There was a rescue of around 70 doves released in a NYC park last summer. Here's the news story:

Re:Adopt a bird and save a life - 2010/01/04 22:14 All told there were around 70 birds rescued from that park. Most went to the Eastern Shore Sanctuary. $800 was raised to build them an aviary to live in.

As for domestic pigeons, they are better fliers than doves, but they are raised in lofts being cared for by people. They have no survival skills either and most don't survive for long.
