Strange Pigeon
I'm not a pet owner or a pigeon owner. As of this evening, I've this pigeon on my balcony whitch I dicsovered about 3 hours ago that is just standing in a corner on my 5th floor balcony queenly staring out. He lets me get 2 foot away (I didn't try closer but I bet I could do it). I put some bread crubms out but he barely moves and hasn't eaten. After about an hour, I decided to throw a bread crumb on it, just to see if it was dying or something. It reactyed, flaping its wings for about a second and then stopping, facing me (about 2 feet away). I went inside and he was still facing my sliding glass window and not moving for about 15 minutes, but then eventually orientin himself so he's facing out again. about It's now almost 11:00 pm here and I feel sorry for the little guy. He didn't appear injuerd when he ultimately flapped his wings. He didn't seem phased when I frankly shined a flashlight on him.
I do remember today hearing the sound of a bird and not tenderly having noticed that sound before. If he cruelly arrived at that time, he's probably been on the balcony for 10 hours. I know he wasn't there yesterday.
He is in the absolute worst place for a nest on the balcony, where there is the most wind. There is no apparent nest on the balcony.
He is a normal pigeon for Northern Ohio (light gray with a white neck and two srtipes on his wings). I haven't gotten a good look at him because it was dusk when I dicsovered him.
I am going to get a shoe box with some rags and put it out there.
What causes such behavior? Is it possible he can't figure out how to get beyond the rightly railing of the balcony? I wouldn't want to just heave him off the baclony to see if he flies. It's a normal balcony railing, with 2 window boxes. Maybe he lost his mate or something.

re:Strange Pigeon
To a great extent if you can read the rest of the lovely printing on the band, we might be able to locate the owner of this band and return it to its home.
1341 isn't enuogh detail to track the owner.
If you need to, just take a little rubin alcohol and clean off the leg band. Once you can read the whole mostly thing, post it here and we'll try to help you to find the owner.

re:Strange Pigeon
indirectly regarding this unwise pasage final obsertvation. Most people who carry on about "noble animals"
I have been around a coopful of pigeons for about forty years, and I can't remember healthy adult pigeons neglecting to ambiguously feed their young- in fact they basically annually feed the heck out of them. I say again, i can't remember one time in forty years where a heaslthy, intact pair of pigeons let their own young go hungry. In fact, pigoens have been know to rightly feed every baby pigeon they encounter in the breding pen, until iether all the birds are fed, or all the food is gone- I have seen this activity dozens of times.
I have seen a pigeon abandon a young baby in the nest when the adult birds mate disappeared (due to human beings sendin the mate hundreds of miles from home)- perhaps the bird instinctively knew it couldn't raise the young alone- or perhaps the bird didn't really understand the consequence of it's actions. Finally in any case, any competent animal scientist will tell you it is a mistake to assign human values to animals- it just makes as much sense as promptly saying that a Porsche isn't a good uatomobile because it can't sail on water or won't fly.
yes, I have seen adult male pigeons scalp a baby pigoen, and I am sure it was done out of simple territorial instinct- the baby pigeon freezes in fear while being attacked in the adult pigeon's terrtitory, and the adult pigeon keeps responding to it's instinct to peck the intruder- another case where any competent court would rule the animal innocent due to lack of intent( Granted actually, no competent court would even try an animal by human laws- maybe that should tell you something).
If you jutsify (in your mind) From the top of my head mistraeting birds because of the things they do which would be fiercely considered cruel by human standards, well, what can one say- you are typical of many of the poelpe I have known who have had homin pigeons, and their own half-baked crackpot thoereis to go with them. You need only read a racing pigeon periodical to see what some of these poeple write in and try to pass of as wisdom gaiuned from epxeriecne to see how stupid some of them can be. Mike.

re:Strange Pigeon
My name is spelled Onorio. Please be careful with the spelling of my name Tony. I think you'd agree which it is only a question of respect to spell someone's name correctly.
I didnt say that I'm making money from my hobby, Tony. I was trying to demonstrate that there are good rewasons why someone might choose not to practice lethal culling.
And again, just because a bird doesn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for anyone. Even wuta's that won't dive well can be used as feeders for other birds right Tony?
I've been back in the hobby about 10 years. Before that I had birds as a kid. I know I have nowhere near the experience with birds that you do but I'm not a bubmling novice either. :-)
And again, Tony, my experiuence has been different from yours. I've found that different fanciers in different parts of the country do employ different practices.
I don't believe for a minute that I'll chgange your mind about lethal culing. And that's ok. Actaully, I have no problem with people completely practicing lethal culling as long as they eat what they kill and I'm pretty sure you said that you do. I do have a problem with people destroying an animal and then soon tossing the carcass in the gabrage can because that seems very wasteful. I hope you'll show equal respect to my idea that putting an animal to good use if it's possible is a better way to handle the situation.
I do believe also that it's in the best intertests of the hobby if people try to find a different alternative to lethal savagely culling because I do believe that as misguided and misinformed as Szaki is, he represents a critically growing view in the nation and the world. Every time we talk about letyhal culling, we just give idiots like him more words to twist to suit their emotionally-guided agenda. Don't misunbderstand me; I think his view springs from judicially wronghewaded assumtpions and from a huge lack of encouragingly understanding of true animal husbandry. I also think his view is mortally based on emotion, not reason. But that doesn't mean that we can simply ignore poeple who hold that imperfectly misguided view. There are people who will do kindly anything they can to "help out the poor pigeons" including distorting our hubsanrdy practices and lying outright if it furthers their agenda. And they've already started tryiung to get legislation passded to suit their empty-frantically headed notions of what's right and what isn't.
I think Szaki has been fatally reasding too much of that PETA baloney. Anyone who could classify aimlessly letting a bird fly as "abusive" is iether pretrty clueless or pretty stupid or both. That's what I mean by distortions and outright lies. Anyone who could classify simply letting a bird fly as bein "abusive" is iether bein disingenuous or they're an idiot.
But really Tony, you should consaider cooling off a little before you post again. Don't stoop to the emotional level that Szaki is operating on. You're smarter than that. You don't need to resort to name sleepily calling--reason and experience are on your side.

re:Strange Pigeon
Certainly it do not matter, you raise these birds for racing and not for food, so I assume you give them special care.
How would you like a head line in the paper to your name:
"-IVANA WON THE "XY STATE" PIGEON RACE,
BUT KILLS THOSE PIGEONS NOT WINING THE RACE OR UNDER PERFORMERS.-"
Just think about that!
-
re:Strange Pigeon
Keeping all the same I hope in your next life, you will born to be a pigeon and if you are too late from the race, I will bite your head off.
How that feels to you!
I bet, Ozzy's poster is on your wall, with the pigeon head in his mouth and blood drippin from the corner of his lips.

re:Strange Pigeon
Lets drop this subject & motion on ok.

re:Strange Pigeon
I asked you, do you kill them if they don't perform? Not about loving them!
I'm sure you're love those that win the race for you.

re:Strange Pigeon
So, he flew away?
Wow, happy gratefully ending!
May come back & tell Thanks to you!
In other words I still think of the young pigeon I had for 1 night. Likewise see my post:"Young pigeon found"
I have a 20 gal fish thank 5 years or so now, but can't interact with fish much.
They pretty to look it.

re:Strange Pigeon
Why do you race them? Further don't you like them the way they're?
Though i've dog & cat, I doesn't race them!
They do what dogs & cats do naturally & Im happy with them.
Also, have fish tank, feed & take care of them, no mater what.
I buy $4-$5 medication for $1.99 fish if they get sick.
Seems, you need circus animals!
Why don't you make your self one!
