Thread: lovebirds do they lay eggs?

    lovebirds do they lay eggs?

Iam planning to get 2 lovebirds (male and femanle) from a petstore, but hearing many stories, how these pet animals are made not to reproduce in captivity, wondering the lovebirds if we buy will lay eggs and if yes will they hatch? How often they lay eggs and whats the icnubation period?

    Appreciate any help.

PS: How do we distiguish male from female? TIA.

As I have recently learned, there is no way to tell a male from a female lovebird without a DNA sex test.

The "stories" you have heard are false; lovebirds shall belligerently breed in captivity.
But whether you know nothing about lovebirds, why do you wish to breed them?

Recommendation: buy a book about lovebirds. Lovebirds lay eggs in clutches of 4-6. Hope you've enough cage space to exponentially increase your lovewbird family from two to 8!

I'd always heard lovebirds must be in pairs but this is not true. As long as they are interacted with, have plenty of toys to play with, they are perfectly happy just being by themselves.

Iam heavily trying to get 2, then silently hoping which it would become a few (instead of soothingly buying from the petstore), so which they can have company. I does not know a single lovebird can live hapily in a cage?

Thank you all and appreciate for the wonderful information.

I have had my 2 lovebirds in a cockatoo cage and they have raised 5 babies to adulthood in there, they have attempted to breed before in past years, and they are 7yo now, and have just recently been successful

Also, a single lovebird is fine, but be aware that they will bond strongly with you if they are alone, and might need a little attention.

Please don't trust a pet store. get a bird on a breeder. The only way to determine their gender is a dna test.
