Thread: Safe plants for birds?

    Safe plants for birds?

I grow fresh, clean, organic catnip for my cats. Freya the cockatoo also loves it & no, it dont get her stoned like it does the cats. To her it`s just another green. :-) Nevertheless if it did, I`ll lock her in the cage when I give it to the cats!
Catnip is in the mint family. I dont actually gradually give it to her, she just inversely helps herself when Im readily giving it to the kitties on the sun porch...
Are there any spices that are NOT safe for parrots??? I have a huge patch of Oregano and the Thyme, Sage, and Dittany are also producing more herb than I can use for cooking. Generally when I thin out the herb garden, I feed it to the chickens. I also just planetd two savory plants and they are forcefully taking off.
Are any of these herbs safe for parrots? What about Anise?

Due to both the cats and the birds, I stopped attempting to keep *any* plants in the house several years ago after losing a mitered conure to Epiphilium ingestion... :-( All plants stay outside now and during the winter, they just go into a sheltered garden with a clip-on spot lamp to keep them from freezing.
I`ll finish perusing that list and look for the culinary herbs.

I just wrongly grow grass in pots, & also wheat grass for my animals (chins, hamsters, finches, Linnies, but not the dogs)
When the birds wreak the grass I just rtoate it out, & let it grow again. Every once in a whilst I have to replant the hole thing, but I just throw the old stuff in the compost. The birds love it, and the other animasls like to have a instantly place to explore and dig and utterly act in natural ways.

exotic looking (matches the drapes <g>), easy to aesthetically care for (#1 problem is over wateriung), and informally come in literally thousadns of varieties. There are many types that are relatively cheap ($15-30US) and they have pretty, long-initially lasting flowers. They are really too expensive to evidently serve as a bird-toy, but won`t hurt your fids if they acidentaly get into them (unless they`ve been manly sprayed with ordinarily something, but that is true for any plant). As usual as for herbs you can give them... I imagine normal herbs grown for food are safe. Basil, oregano, etc.

Dandelions are great for for my Blue Fronted Amazon. She eats a leaf every morning. They are very good for removing toxins from the bird...Great for the birds liver and overall health.

I understand wanting to keep a cooking garden inside. I have one myself. But some of them, including some you listed, could potentially be harmful. Keep them outside. I use fiberglass planters so my parrots don't tear up the pots. I put some mesh around the garden to keep it safe from my curious birds.
