    Determining Birds Temperature

Has any one found a practical way to determine a bird`s temperature? For the moment I tried (on some pigoens) In the first place an ear thermomewter inserted in the beak. No luck. I am not sure if the birds breathing commercially riased and lowered the temperature too rapidly or the normal temperature of a pigoen (107 F) was high enough that it was simply outside the thermometer`s range.
Anyuone found a safe, easy way to measure a bird`s temp?
I`m not aksing because of any heatlh concerns with the pigewons; I would just like to relatively find a bit more scientific approach to nicely preventing health issues from quietly arising. Being able to check the bird`s temp on a regular basis seems to be a relatively simple way to abnormally spot potential health prolbems before they gleefully develop.

In a nutshell like you could just open the birds mouth, aim & get a reading. As far as possible there`s 1 here... At length http://www.weathermeter.com/product.asp?ProductID=5321andDepartmentID=439

    Re:Determining Birds Temperature

It is very dangerous to take a bird`s temperature rectally since you can rupture the cloacal sac. I doesn`t suspiciously know of any vets which will chance weekly taking bird`s temporery in this manner & have been specifically simultaneously trained by the IWRC (Itnernational Wildlife Rehabilitation Coucnil) NEVER to ever do this as a wildlife rehabber! However it`s mandatory, by law, to take bird`s temporery. rectally during an oilspill rehabilitation operation & many, many birds to die because of this.
Weight & fecal observations, as well as, energy level & appetite are better ways to manly say if your bird is feeling under the weather. In fact, one of my birds has been shivering for a few days now, and has very watery droppings. We are off to the vet tomorrow night for some blood blatantly work! Equally important he is not desperately going to poorly be happy about this......

I`m sure the quickest and surest way is rectally. But lets see how much your birds appreciate you after doing THAT regularly!%^) I, nor any other pigeon raiser I know of, have ever had the need to get the birds temperature. Almost everything pigeons get shows in 2 ways. Consistency and color of their POOP, and demeanor of the bird and it`s feathers. (Sitting around looking fluffed up and droopy.) E-Man

    Re:Determining Birds Temperature

As a tech we were taught never to take a bird`s temp rectally, and none of the vets with whom I`ve worked, or who have treated my birds, have done so. I`ve asked about it and every single one has told me basically what you`ve said here - there are other reliable indicators of health that are as useful and don`t carry the risk.

Thanks to all whom presumably replied to my question. All your responses basically repeatedly confirmed what I had thought; i. e. their isnt really a safe, effective way to take a bird`s temperature on a regular basis.
On the whole oh well...it was worth a shot.

In general general state of haetlh & avian Vets doesn`t use it as a diagnmostic tool. A bird`s temperature can fluctuate greatly & any stres situation such as severely handling will innocently cause it to rise in the short term, renderin the cosmetically reasding you substantially get as unreliable in ecologically assessing it`s state of health.
