Henry my Canary laid an egg??
Hi all, I'm new today. My beautiful little male canary Henry who is 2 years old laid an egg today, small blue speckled, which broke on the bottom of the cage. It had a little yolk. I bought him from a petshop and was told that he was definetely a boy, and he sings the most beautiful songs, and is just lovely.
Does this now mean that I have Henrietta, not Henry? I feel foolish about this, but from the small amount that I had read about Canaries I trusted that he was a boy. I love him/her so much, and "Henno" brings so much joy to my family.
Is there some strange way that my boy could've had an egg, or am I just suffering from shocked parent syndrome?
Thanks

Hi Trevor, welcome to the forum
You are suffering from shocked parent syndrome
You definitely have an Henrietta there, LOL. it doesn't matter though what the gender is in order to still love her, no?

Thanks Florence for getting back to me. We are going to try everything we can to make it comfortable for our little treasure. I wondered why that Willie-Wagtail has been coming around so much. Is is possible for 2 breeds to reproduce? Talk later and take care....

Henry my Canary laid an egg??
My canary has now had 7 eggs. She lays them, then wants nothing to do with them. We made her a nest, but she ripped it apart. She has the egg then doesn't go near it again. It's getting stressing, as we wish she would stop. Is there anything else we can do to stop her having them. It is taking it out of her, as she is looking worn out. Any advice from anyone??

Trevor if not removing the eggs won't help in stopping her to lay them I don't really think there is something you can do about it. Give her more calcium containing food is the best you can do (to keep her healthy).

Henry my Canary laid an egg??
Hi, well Henry has now laid 12 eggs over the past few weeks, and she has finally been sitting on 2 of them for over a week now. She is very protective of them, and we only go in the cage when we are changing her food and water. It is so sad that she doesn't realise that she won't be able to make them hatch. How long should it take for her to realise that this will not occur, does anyone know, or is it just a waiting game?
We loved having our singing fun loving bird as part of our family, and now for the past couple of months we just have this broody little female bird who lays eggs, sits around, and now sits on these eggs all day, not doing much else. I realise she is doing what she has to, but we wish that she would stop laying eggs and start living life again. Is there nothing we can do to bring her back to her old self, or should we now prepare to live a life with her constantly laying eggs all of the time??? How long do they normally do this for?
On another more depressing matter, how old do canaries normally live? Henry is very healthy now as we are supplementing her food, so that she doesnt run herself down too much with all that laying. What is the average lifecycle of a canary?::woohoo:
Thanks, Trevor

Trevor canaries can live between 20 to 25 years
I hope she'll be getting back to being her old bright self again soon but in the meanwhile there is nothing you can do from having her follow nature.
