No eggs in the nest, but male still feeds her!

I recently bought 2 canaries, when we got them the lady didnt know what sex they were as there were alot of canaries in the cage. They are both a yr old and since getting them i have noticed the "female" i assume sits in the nest box with no eggs layed or mating occurred and lets the other canary, maybe a male?? feed her. Once he has fed her she will leave the nest and then go feed herself. Is she just being greedy or is something going on that i don't know about?:S Any help on this would be appreciated.. they are an odd couple one is a gloucestor and one is like a yellow and brown colouring. Thanks

Fifi86, welcome to the forum I hope you will like it here.

Well, it could be many things we can never be sure of. As long as both are OK with the situation as it occurs I think that's fine, no?

oh yeah it doesn't worry them i just wondered if only males feed the females etc. Cos i havnt heard the male sing yet, but have just assumed he's a male cos he feeds the other one. They seem happy enough pretending to build nests and sit in it but she has definately not laid eggs or been mating with the other bird from what i see. thanks for the quick reply

It could be that it is not a male? Because dominating birds could also take care of other birds when in captivity (simply said: when encaged together). It sounds though that they are a happy couple, no matter which gender. That is good to hear and must be a joy to watch
